Cliff Kibuuka – Village Horse 4 (series)

Cliff Kibuuka – Village Horse 4 (series). Kibuuka’s art is a documentation of Kampala city with its diverse character that is symbolic of a metropolis in these contemporary times. The artist paints the shanty clustered settlements, rusty roofs in the foreground and sometimes the permanent posh structures in the background to illustrate the legendary order and chaos that so much defines the capital. His recent paintings are prevalent with an almost magical aura characterized with the inclusion of the subject of cloud formation. According to the artist, this metaphorical showcase is a rejoinder to the subject of documentation of the unique identity of the city – inclusive of any historical space- that is subject to now varied changes: the increased urbanization, new landscape designs and the rapid change in climate.

Cliff had his maiden art exhibition at Makerere University art gallery immediately after his graduation.
Over the years Cliff has developed a distinctive style of painting in his favorite oils on canvas using a pallette knife.
He’s known for his vivid colours capturing landscapes around East Africa, mostly slums, markets and fishing boats.
He says this particular scenery is a reminder of his childhood. Growing up with a single mother with 4 other siblings meant living in humble neighbourhoods with usually what would be referred to shanty housing. His mother worked random jobs to make ends meet in markets, and most importantly as a tailor, in which she later got an education and became a bonafide fashion designer. (I usually jokingly add….”creativity runs in the family” heheehe)
He also paints night scenery, urban landscapes and still-life.
He has successfully curved out a niche in the classic art of landscape painting and set himself apart as one of the very few artists still working in diminishing art of oil painting on the African continent.
Cliff has participated in numerous exhibitions in his native Uganda (Kampala), Kenya (Nairobi), South Africa, Norway and Denmark.
