What Dak’Art Is, and Why It Matters More Than Its Budget Suggests
Conceived in 1989 and first held in 1990, Dak’Art is the longest-running large-scale art event on the African continent. It has outlasted its funding crises, its political interruptions and several rounds of predicted obsolescence, which is more than can be said for a good many better-capitalised biennials.
Its history is not a smooth ascent. The first artistic director was appointed only in 2006. The 2008 edition ran on a reduced budget and was assembled late. In 2010 the European Commission, a major financial partner, withdrew support. The 2024 edition was postponed by six months amid political unrest in Senegal. When the government confirmed dates for 2026, the relief in the Senegalese art world was proportionate to the anxiety that had preceded it.
What has kept it central is the open call. Dak’Art remains one of the very few genuine entry points into the international art system for artists working on the continent without gallery representation — a discovery platform rather than a confirmation of status. A significant number of artists now shown in London, New York and Venice surfaced first through this selection process.
Morad Montazami and the Theme
The Steering Committee appointed Morad Montazami — art historian, publisher and curator, founder of Zamân Books & Curating, an editorial and curatorial platform devoted to modern and contemporary Arab, African and Asian art. He was previously curator of Middle Eastern and North African art at Tate Modern, and is currently a fellow at the Villa Medici.
His specialism is global modernism and the alternative modernisms that developed outside the Western canon — which tells you the edition is likely to be research-driven and historically argumentative rather than a survey of current practice.
The term antifragility is borrowed from Nassim Nicholas Taleb, who coined it to describe systems that do not merely withstand shocks but improve because of them. Resilient things survive stress; antifragile things require it. Montazami’s reframing is social rather than statistical: to be (anti)fragile is to convert fragility into expressive and artistic strength through communal bonds and co-creation.
Applied to an African art ecosystem that has spent three decades operating with thin institutional funding, interrupted state support and infrastructure built and rebuilt by practitioners themselves, the theme is close to autobiographical. The stated frame reaches past objects into workshops, schools, collectives, archives, mutual aid and what one guide to the edition called the slow labour behind cultural survival. It also extends beyond the human, into coexistence with the living world, and explicitly includes island and archipelagic contexts within its definition of the African diaspora.
The Structure: Six Layers, Not One Exhibition
The layering is the point, and it is what distinguishes Dak’Art from a fair. This is not an event you attend at a single venue; it is one that occupies a city for a month, and the OFF is the reason the whole of Dakar participates rather than one district.
The OFF: What It Is and How to Register
The OFF consists of autonomous artistic events organised around the central event. The General Secretariat actively encourages these initiatives, and — this is the crucial part — the content is left entirely to the discretion of their promoters, subject only to compliance with Senegalese law.
There is no curatorial gatekeeping. You are not selected; you register. For a gallery, a collective, a studio or an institution, it is the most accessible route into one of the most concentrated gatherings of curators, collectors and critics anywhere on the continent.
Registration runs from 27 July to 13 September 2026. The form and terms of participation are published by the Biennale’s General Secretariat at biennaledakar.org. The Secretariat has been explicit about expecting deadlines to be observed, which in practice means that late applications are unlikely to be accommodated.
Anyone planning an OFF event should also be budgeting now rather than in October. Venue, insurance, shipping into Senegal, installation labour and printing all take longer than a first-time organiser expects, and December in Dakar is not a quiet month.
The Main Call Has Closed
For completeness: the open call for the official international exhibition ran from 15 April to 15 June 2026 and is now closed. It was addressed to African visual artists and artists of the diaspora working in architecture, digital arts, design, installation, mixed media, painting, performance, photography, sculpture, sound, street art and graffiti, video art and animation.
If you missed it, the OFF is the remaining route in for 2026, and the next international call will fall in the first half of 2028.
Dakar and Venice, in the Same Year
2026 has been an unusually concentrated year for African contemporary art, and the two events speak to each other more directly than usual.
The 61st Venice Biennale was conceived by Koyo Kouoh, who founded RAW Material Company in Dakar in 2008 and convened her Venice curatorial team there in April 2025, weeks before her death. Senegal is presenting its second national pavilion at Venice this year, curated by Massamba Mbaye with the artist Caroline Gueye.
The scheduling is neat to the point of poignancy: Venice closes on 22 November, three days after Dak’Art opens. An exhibition designed in Dakar for Venice hands over, almost to the day, to the biennale in the city where it was planned.
Practical Notes for Visitors
The biennale runs a full month, which is unusually generous, and the first week carries the openings, the discursive programme and the largest concentration of international visitors. It is also when accommodation is hardest to find. Later in the run is quieter, cheaper and easier, at the cost of the professional networking.
Budget time for the OFF specifically. It is dispersed across Dakar, it is where a good deal of the most interesting work sits, and it rewards wandering in a way the official exhibition does not.
