Art Basel Paris runs at the Grand Palais from 21 to 25 October 2026, and it arrives having quietly done something its organisers cannot say out loud: it has begun to eclipse Basel itself. A good number of American collectors now prefer the French capital to the Swiss original, and the 2026 edition is the first under a new director, Karim Crippa.
It also closes the October window. Frieze finishes in London on the 18th; three days later the same international audience reassembles in Paris.
How It Overtook Basel
The fair launched in 2022 as Paris+ par Art Basel, filling the gap left by FIAC, and was renamed Art Basel Paris once it settled. It is now firmly installed in the Grand Palais, which is the single largest reason for its ascent.
Basel is a small Swiss city that becomes an art fair for a week. Paris is Paris, and the fair happens inside it. For a collector deciding where to spend four days in October, the calculation is not close — and dealers follow collectors.
Crippa’s first edition will be watched for whether that momentum is structural or simply the novelty of a very good building.
Paris Internationale, Which Is Often the Better Fair
Running alongside since 2015, Paris Internationale is nomadic — it takes a different building each year — and organised by gallerists rather than a fair company. Exhibitors are invited rather than applying.
That invitation-only structure is exactly why it repays a visit. Without an application process and the booth fees that come with it, younger galleries who could not carry a Grand Palais stand are in the room. If you want to see what the market looks like two years from now rather than today, this is where to spend the afternoon.
Planning Around London
The three-day gap between Frieze closing on 18 October and Paris previews opening on the 21st is deliberate on the fairs’ part and awkward on yours. Doing both means either a week away or two trips.
If you can only do one and you are buying, the honest answer depends on what you collect. Frieze Week gives you Frieze London, Frieze Masters, PAD and 1-54 within twenty-five minutes of each other — four fairs, one city, enormous range. Paris gives you a stronger single fair in a better building, plus Paris Internationale.
For African and diasporic work specifically, London is the clearer choice this year. 1-54 has no equivalent in Paris.
Practicalities
Book accommodation now if you have not. Paris in the third week of October is expensive and full, and the fair is not the only reason.
Preview access on the 21st and 22nd is the commercially serious part of the fair — the days when significant work is placed. General admission from the 23rd is for looking rather than for first refusal, and that is worth knowing before paying for a preview ticket you may not need.
If you buy and are shipping outside the EU, factor customs and import VAT into the price at the stand rather than afterwards. It is the charge that surprises fair buyers most consistently.
